On the morning of July 24, 2026, the perimeter wall of an apartment building on Pentadaktylou Street in Agios Dometios, Nicosia, collapsed during excavation works for the construction of a new neighboring residential complex. Residents were immediately evacuated, though no injuries were reported. The affected apartment building is approximately five years old. Engineers from the Nicosia District Local Government Organization (EOA Nicosia) and the Cyprus Land Development Corporation (KOAG) were dispatched to the site to assess the situation and ensure the stability of the surrounding structures.

Following the incident, the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (ETEK) appointed an expert to investigate the structural failure. Preliminary findings suggest that necessary protective measures for deep excavation may not have been strictly followed. ETEK is currently awaiting formal terms of reference from the EOA Nicosia to provide a comprehensive technical report.

In the aftermath of the collapse, ETEK has written to provincial authorities across Cyprus, urging the establishment of a rigorous technical process for evaluating and managing potentially dangerous buildings. The chamber emphasizes that while public safety remains the top priority, decisions regarding the demolition of structures should be based on exhaustive technical documentation that considers both safety risks and the historical or cultural value of the properties.
