The European Central Bank (ECB) has officially presented ten shortlisted design concepts for the next generation of euro banknotes. These designs, selected from over 1,200 submissions by graphic artists across Europe, focus on two core themes: 'European Culture' and 'Rivers and Birds.' During the presentation, ECB President Christine Lagarde emphasized that the new banknotes aim to strengthen European identity by combining aesthetics with significant cultural meaning.

Citizens across the Eurozone are invited to participate in an online survey to provide feedback on these proposals until September 21, 2026. Simultaneously, an independent research firm will conduct a representative poll. This initiative marks the first comprehensive redesign of euro banknotes since their introduction in 2002. The new series will incorporate advanced security and accessibility features while aiming for a reduced environmental footprint. The ECB Governing Council is expected to select the final design by the end of 2026, taking into account public input, expert evaluations, and technical requirements. Existing banknotes will remain legal tender and will not lose their value.
