The Cyprus National Council held a meeting on July 24, 2026, chaired by President Nikos Christodoulides, to prepare for the upcoming visit of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to the island, scheduled from July 27 to 29. During the session, the President briefed parliamentary parties on the latest developments regarding the Cyprus issue since the Council's previous meeting on June 22, 2026.

In a joint statement, the National Council welcomed Guterres' visit as a sign of his commitment to resolving the Cyprus problem and formally supported the President's efforts to resume negotiations. The Council also welcomed the appointment of Raffaele Fitto, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, as the EU Special Envoy for the Cyprus issue. Participants expressed their collective backing for the President's diplomatic strategy aimed at achieving a comprehensive settlement.

Following the meeting, President Christodoulides is scheduled to travel to Athens to coordinate with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Potential meetings with Raffaele Fitto and UN personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin are also anticipated. According to the planned schedule, Guterres will hold separate meetings with both leaders on Tuesday, followed by a joint dinner, with a joint meeting and a press conference slated for Wednesday morning.
