Following a session of the National Council on July 24, 2026, Annita Demetriou, President of the Democratic Rally (DISY) and Speaker of the House, reaffirmed that the Cyprus issue remains the nation's absolute priority. The political leadership, including representatives from DISY, AKEL, and DIKO, met to discuss the upcoming visit of the UN Secretary-General and the potential for new diplomatic momentum. Demetriou emphasized that the DISY party is committed to supporting efforts that lead to the resumption of negotiations from the point where they were interrupted at Crans-Montana.

Demetriou stressed that the party advocates for maintaining the existing negotiating framework and the acquis, warning against premature negative stances that could lead to international isolation. She asserted that any progress in European Union-Turkey relations must be strictly linked to respect for international law and meaningful steps toward a solution in Cyprus. Furthermore, she highlighted that the appointment of a European Union special representative and the UN initiatives must be utilized effectively to improve the negotiating position of the Republic of Cyprus.

While party leaders expressed a shared interest in capitalizing on the UN Secretary-General's presence, they maintained varying degrees of caution. AKEL’s Stefanos Stefanou emphasized that any optimism depends heavily on Turkey's stance, while DIKO’s Nikolas Papadopoulos expressed hope that the contacts will facilitate a broader international conference.
