Drowning statistics in Cyprus for 2025 released
On the occasion of the National Day for the Prevention of Drowning and Sea Accidents, observed on July 25, the Ministry of Health of Cyprus released data regarding water-related fatalities in the country during 2025. Eliza Karampetian, representing the non-profit organization Safe Water Sports, reported that 33 people lost their lives due to drowning in Cyprus last year.
The data indicates that 28 of the incidents occurred in the sea, while five took place in inland waters. Demographically, 73% of the victims were male, 61% were foreign nationals, and 15 individuals were over the age of 70. Geographically, the free Famagusta area recorded the highest number of deaths with ten, followed by Limassol with nine, Larnaca with six, Paphos with two, and Nicosia with one. Notably, 36% of these incidents occurred between 20:00 and 08:00.
Globally, drowning remains a significant public health issue, claiming approximately 300,000 lives annually, with 75,000 of those being children under the age of five. This information is intended to raise awareness about water safety and the urgent need for preventative measures to reduce these fatalities.
