Criminal charges filed against Makarios Drousiotis regarding the 'Santi' case
On July 24, 2026, criminal charges were filed in a Nicosia court against author Makarios Drousiotis and a person or entity identified as 'Santi'. The prosecution follows an extensive police investigation into allegations and reports published by Drousiotis last March, which authorities have officially declared to be based on fabricated messages. The indictment contains 101 charges, including the creation and circulation of forged documents, the publication of false news, and harassment.
Former MEP Demetris Papadakis, whose name was previously linked to the case before being cleared of involvement, publicly commented on the development. Papadakis, who was removed from the 'Alma' movement's ballot for the 2026 legislative elections due to the controversy, posted on social media that the "countdown has begun" for Drousiotis. He further questioned whether the author would attempt to challenge the court's authority as part of an anti-establishment narrative.
The case remains ongoing as it proceeds to court. Police Chief Themistos Arnaoutis emphasized that the conclusion regarding the falsified nature of the evidence is definitive and based on thorough investigation rather than subjective assessment.
