Severe storms and intense lightning activity sweep across Greece

A severe weather system characterized by intense rainfall, hail, and high-velocity winds impacted Greece on July 24, 2026. The storm produced an extreme density of electrical activity, with over 100,000 lightning strikes recorded within a few hours. Meteorologists and authorities, including the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, issued multiple warnings to residents via the 112 emergency alert system across several regions, including Phthiotis, Larissa, Magnesia, the Sporades, and Evia.

In the region of Phthiotis, specifically in Makrakomi, the storm caused structural damage when a roof was detached, and several trees were downed, damaging parked vehicles. No injuries were reported, though agricultural crops also sustained damage. In Attica, the weather deteriorated in the evening, with reports of localized flooding, downed trees, and gale-force winds reaching 8 to 9 on the Beaufort scale, with gusts hitting 90 km/h in urban areas. The severe phenomena are expected to continue through Saturday, mainly affecting eastern and southern Greece, with gradual improvement forecasted for the afternoon.
