On July 24, 2026, the General Assembly of the International Criminal Court (ICC) voted to remove Prosecutor Karim Khan from his position. Out of the 125 member states, 82 voted in favor of his dismissal. The decision follows allegations of sexual misconduct brought by a member of his staff, which Khan and his legal team categorically deny, labeling the proceedings as procedurally unfair and lacking evidence. Last month, an ICC supervisory body concluded that the 56-year-old British lawyer had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a younger staff member.

The removal takes place amidst intense diplomatic pressure. The United States, which is not a member of the ICC, has previously imposed sanctions on eleven court officials, including Khan, while announcing a campaign to challenge the institution's authority. Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, welcomed the dismissal, characterizing Khan's prior decision to issue an arrest warrant for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a politically motivated act that failed to shield him from misconduct allegations.

While the ICC has formalised the dismissal, Khan continues to contest the legality of the process. The diplomatic fallout remains significant, as the U.S. continues its efforts to weaken the court, citing concerns over sovereignty, while the ICC moves forward with its internal transition following this leadership change.
