On July 24, 2026, the Cypriot Minister of Transport, Alexis Vafeades, announced a comprehensive €493 million infrastructure plan designed to tackle chronic traffic congestion in Limassol. The initiative follows significant population growth and rapid residential development in the city, which have overwhelmed existing road networks.

The project includes both immediate tactical improvements and long-term structural changes. A key priority is the construction of a northern bypass to redirect transit traffic away from dense urban areas. Additional infrastructure works feature new arterial roads, expansion of existing avenues, improved junctions, and a new highway connecting the Ipsonas and Polemidia districts. Furthermore, a road leading toward the Saittas reservoir in the Troodos mountains is planned. To optimize daily traffic flow, the government will implement an Urban Traffic Control (UTC) system across 50 signalized intersections, allowing for automatic signal adjustments based on real-time traffic volume.

Minister Vafeades has held consultations with mayors of the Greater Limassol area to prioritize these projects based on urgency and necessity. The strategy aims to enhance connectivity between districts and establish reliable alternative routes to reduce the burden on current thoroughfares.
