Cyprus athletes compete at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow
At the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the Cypriot men's gymnastics team secured fifth place in the team event with a total score of 228.350 points. The team, composed of Marios Georgiou, Sokratis Pilakouris, Giorgos Angonas, Neofytos Kyriakou, and Kyriakos Markidis, competed against top-tier nations including Canada, England, Australia, and Scotland. This performance was notable as the team competed without experienced athletes Ilias Georgiou and Michalis Charis.
In swimming, Maria Erokhina successfully qualified for the 100m breaststroke semifinals, finishing 16th in the preliminaries. She was scheduled to compete for a spot in the final on the evening of July 25. Conversely, Filippos Iakovidis concluded his participation in the Games after finishing 45th in the 50m freestyle with a time of 24.48, having struggled with an injury. In women’s gymnastics, Georgia Charalambous participated in the all-around individual qualifiers, securing the 4th position in her group. The games continue with various finals scheduled through the coming days.
