Fatal attack at Berlin pride celebration
On the night of Saturday, July 25, 2026, a 21-year-old man named Abdul Rahman Toufiq Balout carried out a deadly attack on crowds gathered near Berlin’s Tiergarten park for the annual Christopher Street Day (Pride) celebrations. The perpetrator drove a van into the pedestrians and subsequently attacked individuals with a machete, resulting in the death of a 65-year-old Polish woman and leaving 29 others injured. Authorities classified the incident as an Islamist terrorist attack, noting that Balout, a German citizen of Lebanese descent, had a history of criminal activity and known affiliations with the Islamic State.
Following a massive manhunt, the suspect was located on Sunday evening in a garden complex in the Spandau suburb of Berlin. He was shot and killed during a confrontation with specialized police forces. Investigators recovered a mobile phone from the vehicle used in the attack, which contained a video of Balout swearing allegiance to the Islamic State. Initially, police detained an Iranian man suspected of being an accomplice, but he was released after authorities determined there was insufficient evidence of his involvement.
The attack has sparked a significant political debate in Germany regarding the judicial handling of radicalized individuals. Although Balout was previously identified as a security threat, he was serving a suspended sentence for prior offenses and had been released from juvenile detention in May 2026.
