In July 1974, thousands of unaccompanied children were evacuated from Cyprus to Greece to escape the horrors of the Turkish invasion. Traumatized by the loss of their homes and the uncertainty of war, these minors left behind a bleeding landscape, missing relatives, and the constant echoes of bombardment.

MEP Giorgos Georgiou and journalist Kornilios Hadjikostas recently shared their personal testimonies regarding this exodus. Georgiou, who was 11 years old at the time and a resident of Afaneia in the Famagusta district, recounted his 15-day captivity before reaching the safety of Kyperounta. These stories highlight the lasting bonds formed and the support received from Greek hosts, which served as a crucial lifeline for the children who had to navigate the unknown without their families.
