On Sunday, July 26, 2026, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee officially recognized the wider area of Mount Olympus in Greece as a cultural site of outstanding universal value. The decision was reached unanimously during the 48th session of the committee held in Busan, South Korea.

The Greek delegation, led by the country's permanent representative to UNESCO, Giorgos Koumoutsakos, and composed of experts from the Ministry of Culture and the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, conducted weeks of negotiations to secure this designation. The inclusion of the "mountain of the gods" in the UNESCO list is considered a significant development with major cultural, environmental, and economic implications for Greece.
