Cyprus Minister of Energy, Michalis Damianou, announced that the country will implement new energy storage systems by the summer of 2027 to stabilize the power grid and reduce the need for energy curtailments. Storage units are scheduled to arrive in January 2027, following the signing of contracts with the relevant companies and the Transmission System Operator. While most sources report these units will provide 120 MW of capacity, one source specifies the total capacity at 125 MW. These additions aim to better utilize electricity generated from renewable sources, which currently faces waste due to limitations in the grid.

Beyond these storage solutions, the government has granted connection terms to private entities for an additional 150 MW of power, expected to enter the energy mix within 2027. Furthermore, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) is advancing its own storage projects, with units of 80 MW and 100 MW capacity planned for operation before next summer. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to ensure energy sufficiency during high-demand periods, particularly in summer months when tourism and air conditioning usage strain conventional power capacity. Private companies like Bioland Energy continue to play a major role in the transition, currently managing over 150 photovoltaic parks with a total capacity exceeding 120 MW.
