Energy Minister Michael Damianos announced that Cyprus will receive and install new electricity storage battery systems by the summer of 2027. Contracts have been signed with the relevant supplier and the Transmission System Operator (TSO) to deliver 125 megawatts of storage capacity, with equipment expected to arrive in January 2027. This project aims to stabilize the energy grid by capturing excess renewable energy currently lost during peak generation times.

Currently, Cyprus relies on approximately 1,000 megawatts of conventional power, which faces shortages during summer evenings due to high air conditioning demand and tourism. By storing energy produced by photovoltaic systems during the day, the batteries will help bridge this supply gap and significantly reduce the need for production curtailments. Minister Damianos confirmed that in addition to this project, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) is advancing its own storage initiatives ranging between 80 and 100 megawatts, further strengthening the national energy mix.

The long-term strategy for energy sufficiency also includes private projects, with connection terms already granted for an additional 150 megawatts of capacity. These measures are designed to ensure national energy stability and potentially lower electricity costs for consumers.
