The 23rd Commonwealth Games officially commenced in Glasgow on Thursday night. This multi-sport event, which occurs every four years between the Olympic Games, features approximately 3,000 athletes from 74 nations. The current edition marks a significant reduction in participation compared to previous games, such as Birmingham four years ago, which hosted 5,000 athletes. The competition aims to maintain high performance standards among athletes from nations formerly part of the British Commonwealth.

Cyprus has been participating in the Games since 1978, when Panagiotis Zenios represented the country in the decathlon in Edmonton. Since then, Cypriot athletes have secured a total of 64 medals—25 gold, 16 silver, and 23 bronze—ranking 16th on the all-time medal table. Notable figures such as Marios Hadjiandreou, Fani Theofanous, and various shooting and gymnastics athletes have contributed to this historic tally. Despite the intense competition from global sports powerhouses like Australia, Canada, and Kenya, participation remains a prestigious milestone for Cypriot athletes, serving as a vital platform for gaining international experience and pursuing podium finishes.
