This decision follows the cancellation of the original races in Sakhir and Jeddah earlier this year, which were called off due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the broader instability in the Middle East. The addition of the Sepang event ensures the 2026 championship maintains a 23-race schedule.

Meanwhile, uncertainty remains regarding the season-ending races currently slated for Qatar on November 29 and Abu Dhabi on December 6. Should regional conflicts prevent these rounds from proceeding, the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola has emerged as the primary candidate to host the finale. If implemented, this would mark the first time since 1997 that a European circuit has hosted the final race of the Formula One season, potentially providing a significant event for Ferrari, which is currently contending for its first title since 2008.
