Cyprus issues warnings as extreme heat persists

The Cyprus Meteorological Department has issued a series of yellow weather warnings as the island experiences a prolonged heatwave driven by a seasonal low-pressure system. Residents have been alerted to extreme temperatures that are significantly above seasonal averages, with inland highs consistently reaching 40 degrees Celsius.

A double yellow warning was implemented covering the period from late Wednesday, July 29, through Thursday, July 30. The first phase focused on overnight warmth, with inland temperatures not falling below 26 degrees Celsius from 9:00 pm Wednesday until 6:00 am Thursday. The second phase, covering Thursday afternoon between 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm, warned of peak daytime heat reaching 40 degrees Celsius in inland areas. Coastal regions and higher mountain areas are also affected, with temperatures varying between 20 and 37 degrees Celsius depending on elevation and proximity to the sea.

The weather remains clear and sunny with moderate winds. Meteorological forecasts indicate that these elevated temperatures will persist through the weekend, with no significant relief expected in the coming days. Authorities have advised the public to exercise caution and avoid strenuous physical activities during the hottest parts of the day.
