Cyprus Police issue reminder on mandatory use of warning triangles

On July 27, 2026, the Cyprus Police issued an urgent reminder regarding the legal obligation for drivers to deploy a red reflective warning triangle when their vehicles are stationary on the motorway hard shoulder or other road networks. This notice follows a recent trend of drivers failing to use the required safety equipment, which authorities state significantly increases the risk of serious traffic collisions.

According to traffic legislation, drivers must place the reflective triangular sign approximately 50 meters behind their vehicle when stopped on a motorway or outside built-up areas. Within built-up areas, the sign should be placed at a distance of approximately six meters from the vehicle.

Furthermore, the police clarified that if any portion of a stationary vehicle extends into active traffic lanes, the driver or person responsible for the vehicle must notify the authorities immediately. Compliance with these safety protocols is essential to ensure the safety of all road users and to avoid potential accidents resulting from poor visibility or unexpected obstacles on the road.
