Cyprus introduces new rapid response plan following motorway disruption

On July 27, 2026, the Cypriot Minister of Justice and Public Order, Costas Fitiris, announced the implementation of a new national rapid response plan, dubbed 'Nestor'. This initiative follows a major incident last week where an overturned lorry blocked all four lanes of the Nicosia-Limassol motorway, resulting in seven hours of traffic paralysis.

During a ministerial meeting held at 14:00 on Monday, authorities reviewed the shortcomings of the previous response and established a formal coordination mechanism. The 'Nestor' plan aims to streamline the mobilization of personnel and equipment to clear major road incidents efficiently. The framework defines the specific responsibilities of agencies including the Police, Fire Service, Ambulance Service, Public Works Department, Department of Road Transport, and Civil Defence.

Minister Fitiris acknowledged that the previous incident exposed state weaknesses and served as a 'wake-up call.' The new plan ensures a clearly defined chain of command to manage future large-scale emergencies, prioritizing rapid restoration of traffic flow across Cyprus. The government intends for this multi-agency approach to prevent a repeat of the prolonged disruption experienced by commuters.
