The "Global Cancer Statistics, 2026" report confirms that in 2024, approximately 21 million people were diagnosed with cancer, resulting in 9.8 million deaths. Experts from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, including Professor Theodora Psaltopoulou, Alexandra Stavropoulou, and Thanos Dimopoulos, noted that the lifetime risk of developing cancer is nearly one in five, with mortality projections indicating one in nine men and one in thirteen women will die from the disease.

Looking ahead, the public health challenge is expected to intensify, with projections suggesting that annual new cancer diagnoses could reach 34 million by 2050.
