Former Paphos councilors questioned over alleged illegal municipal hirings

Police Headquarters investigators are conducting interviews with former Paphos municipal councilors regarding allegations of five unlawful hirings that occurred between 2019 and 2021. The sessions, scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, at the Paphos Criminal Investigation Department (CID) offices, aim to clarify the procedures followed during these recruitments and determine if they complied with legal requirements.

The investigation stems from a 2022 complaint filed by a senior municipal official against the suspended Mayor of Paphos, Phedon Phedonos, and the former municipal secretary, Themis Filippidis. The case, which encompasses four separate aspects, was transferred to the Attorney General’s office last January. Following a review in March, the Attorney General mandated additional investigative steps, including the current questioning of former council members to assess their roles and knowledge of the alleged irregularities.
