Demolition work halted in Nicosia over asbestos safety violations
Demolition work at a residential site in the Agios Andreas area of Nicosia was suspended following safety concerns regarding the improper removal of asbestos. The Nicosia District Self-Government Organization (EOA) received complaints from local residents on Saturday, July 25, 2026, alleging that hazardous materials were being handled without following required legal protocols.
Upon inspection by EOA licensing officers, it was determined that the contractor failed to notify residents in writing and violated the Waste Law regarding the management of asbestos. The Department of Labor Inspection (TEE) was notified to oversee the matter. Although the contractor initially attempted to comply with directives, a follow-up inspection on Monday, July 27, revealed remaining asbestos remnants at the site. Consequently, authorities ordered an immediate halt to all waste removal activities to ensure public health and safety.
The site remains under close monitoring by the EOA and the Department of Labor Inspection. Future operations are suspended indefinitely while authorities assess the site and determine if conditions can be met to resume work safely.
