Prominent Cypriot actor Phoebus Georgiades passes away at 79

The Cypriot artistic community is mourning the death of veteran actor Phoebus Georgiades, who passed away on July 27, 2026, after a long career spanning over five decades. A resident of Larnaca, he had been hospitalized in a comatose state for two weeks due to serious health complications before his death.

Born in 1948, Georgiades graduated from the Birmingham School of Speech and Drama in 1969. He spent his early professional years in the United Kingdom, working in theater and television, including roles in BBC and ITV productions. Upon returning to Cyprus, he became a fixture in the local theater scene, collaborating with major institutions such as ETHAL, THOC, and the House of Art. His passing was officially announced by the Actors' Union of Cyprus and the PEO theater branch, while colleague Sofoklis Kaskaounias paid a public tribute to him on social media.

In separate news, Cypriot actor Prokopis Agathokleous also experienced a personal loss this week, sharing a public farewell to his grandfather on Instagram. While the two events are unrelated, both have elicited widespread condolences from the public and the local arts sector.
