Kai Sato, a 39-year-old sailor from California, has been rescued after spending over a month adrift in the Pacific Ocean. Sato departed from Catalina Island on June 7 for his first solo Pacific crossing, but his journey turned critical roughly two weeks later when his sailboat's mast snapped. Following the structural failure, his vessel also ran out of fuel, leaving him stranded and disconnected from communication channels far from major shipping lanes.

For the first week of his ordeal, Sato reported being in a state of despair, drifting southward and even contemplating ending his life. However, he eventually shifted his focus to survival, using PVC pipes and kayak oars to perform makeshift repairs on his sails. After a month of struggle, he managed to reach a major shipping lane. On July 11, he ran out of fresh water and resorted to innovative methods to stay hydrated by collecting seawater in buckets. The ordeal concluded when he was located alive off the coast of Hawaii.
