Escalating maritime attacks in the Black Sea involving merchant and cargo vessels

In late July 2026, the Black Sea region experienced a series of intensified military strikes targeting ports and shipping vessels. Between July 26 and July 28, the Russian Ministry of Defence reported attacks on Ukrainian port infrastructure in Odesa, Chornomorsk, and Mykolaiv, alleging that these sites and vessels were used for transporting military cargo and fuel. A significant casualty occurred on July 26 when the Guinea-Bissau-flagged bulk carrier Golden Leo, which had been damaged on July 19, sank near Odesa, resulting in nine fatalities among its crew and eight survivors.

Simultaneously, the security situation further deteriorated on July 30 near the Russian port of Novorossiysk. Two Greek-managed oil tankers were targeted by drone strikes near the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) terminal. The vessel Nissos Sifnos, sailing under the Marshall Islands flag, caught fire while loading crude oil, but the crew managed to extinguish the blaze with assistance from local support vessels. No casualties were reported in this incident, and there was no environmental leakage. While Russia claims its actions are directed at military logistics, these events underscore the heightened risks for commercial shipping in the region as military operations across the Black Sea and Sea of Azov continue to intensify.
