Fire erupts at Kalo Chorio firing range during illegal ammunition disposal

A significant wildfire broke out on July 27, 2026, at the Kalo Chorio firing range in the Larnaca district of Cyprus. The fire was triggered by the 70th Engineer Battalion during the disposal of RPG shells, an operation conducted despite extreme weather conditions and an active ban on heavy weaponry explosions due to temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius and a high risk of fire.

The incident necessitated an emergency response, involving the Fire Service, the Department of Forests, police units, and four aerial firefighting aircraft. While no human casualties or property damage were reported, the fire briefly forced the evacuation of the Agia Anna and Psevdas villages. Authorities have since declared that there is no remaining active front of the fire.

Cyprus Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas strongly condemned the unit's actions, labeling the operation as unprofessional. He has officially ordered an investigation to determine the exact circumstances and accountability. The Minister emphasized that the decision to proceed with the destruction of munitions under such dangerous conditions is unacceptable and promised that responsibilities will be assigned accordingly as the inquiry proceeds.
