Cyprus faces record wildfire activity amidst state of red alert

Cyprus is currently experiencing an intense wave of wildfires, with authorities responding to approximately 10 blazes daily over the past two weeks, totaling 1,450 incidents since the start of 2026. On July 30, a significant fire broke out near the village of Arsos in Limassol, burning five hectares of vegetation after igniting at an illegal waste site. The blaze necessitated a massive deployment of ground forces, including eight fire engines and six forestry department vehicles, supported by four firefighting aircraft. No injuries were reported, and the site remained under surveillance to prevent flare-ups.

Meanwhile, tensions remain high regarding a separate major fire at the Kalo Chorio firing range. Investigations have widened to include senior National Guard leadership, following revelations that the fire was triggered by a joint ammunition disposal exercise involving U.S. forces. Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas has ordered an administrative report by mid-next week to determine the chain of command's role. Due to extreme fire risk, the Department of Forestry has maintained a "Red Alert" status, warning that any negligence, including littering or unauthorized outdoor activities, carries severe legal penalties. Officials continue to emphasize that human negligence and careless disposal of cigarette butts remain the leading causes of the ongoing fire crisis.
