Wildfire at Kalo Chorio firing range contained after major mobilization

A large wildfire broke out on Monday, July 27, 2026, at the Kalo Chorio firing range in Larnaca, Cyprus, during a National Guard live-fire training exercise. The blaze started at 12:40 p.m. and rapidly expanded due to strong winds and difficult terrain, scorching approximately 120 hectares of scrubland. The fire threatened the villages of Agia Anna and Psevdas, forcing local evacuations and the relocation of residents, including vulnerable individuals from Mosfiloti.

The emergency response involved over 200 personnel from the Forestry Department, Fire Service, National Guard, Police, Civil Defence, and volunteer groups. The state activated the 'Ikaros II' National Plan, utilizing six firefighting aircraft and five helicopters to combat the flames. By 7:30 p.m., the fire was fully contained. While property damage was narrowly avoided for several homes in Agia Anna, one volunteer firefighter sustained injuries and required hospitalization.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire and how it spread beyond the military installation. Officials are maintaining a strong presence in the area to monitor for flare-ups, with aircraft continuing surveillance. The Cyprus Army Officers Association confirmed the incident occurred during scheduled training but emphasized that safety protocols are usually strictly followed, urging the public to await the results of the official investigation.
