Assessment of Moni sewage treatment plant operations

On July 23, 2026, the Environment and Animal Welfare Commissioner, Antonia Theodosiou, held a meeting with the technical management of the Moni Sewage Treatment Plant and representatives of the Limassol District Local Government Organization (EOA). The session followed public reports and complaints regarding potential sewage leaks from the plant into the sea via drainage pipes, prompting both an official meeting and an on-site inspection of the facilities and the adjacent coastal area.

During the discussions, authorities identified specific operational issues at the plant that require immediate corrective measures, particularly concerning the inflow of sewage from tanker trucks. To ensure better oversight and transparent communication, a proposal was tabled to establish a joint committee. This body would include local authorities, the Limassol EOA, and plant management to facilitate regular information exchange and the proactive resolution of operational challenges.

The initiative aims to improve environmental compliance and address public concerns regarding infrastructure performance. While the site inspection and high-level meeting have concluded, the proposed collaborative framework is expected to serve as the primary mechanism for monitoring the plant's future performance and mitigating environmental risks associated with its waste processing operations.
