Israel and Lebanon to hold diplomatic talks in Rome regarding border zones

The United States announced that Israel and Lebanon are scheduled to hold new diplomatic talks in Rome from Tuesday, August 4, to Thursday, August 6. The primary focus of these discussions is the implementation of a framework agreement regarding the creation of "pilot zones" in southern Lebanon, which are intended to be transferred from Israeli control to the Lebanese army.

State Department officials indicated that technical teams aim to resolve outstanding border issues and explore the eventual possibility of a peace agreement between the two nations, which currently maintain no formal diplomatic relations. The objective is to use lessons learned from initial pilot zones to progressively expand the project. However, the Lebanese military expressed concern on Sunday, condemning ongoing Israeli military operations in the region, which they claim hinder the deployment of their forces.

These talks represent a continued diplomatic effort to stabilize the border region. Moving forward, the technical teams will concentrate on refining the implementation process of these zones based on existing experiences, with the goal of expanding their reach across the south.
