Israel and Lebanon to hold new talks in Rome regarding border zones

The United States Department of State confirmed on Monday that representatives from Israel and Lebanon will meet in Rome from August 4 to August 6 for a new round of diplomatic negotiations. These discussions, brokered by the United States, aim to advance the implementation of a framework agreement established in June following the outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah on March 2.

The primary focus of the talks is the expansion of "pilot zones" in southern Lebanon. Under the framework, Israeli forces are expected to gradually withdraw from these areas, allowing for the deployment of the Lebanese army. Technical teams in Rome will also address outstanding border issues and initiate discussions toward a long-term peace and security agreement between the two nations, which currently maintain no formal diplomatic relations.

Despite the progress in diplomatic efforts, tensions remain on the ground. On Sunday, the Lebanese army issued a statement criticizing ongoing Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon, arguing that such actions hinder their ability to deploy forces as required by the June agreement. Officials hope that experience gained from the initial pilot zones will facilitate a more efficient and gradual expansion of the transition process in the region.
