Cyprus municipalities to hold three-hour strike on August 3

Municipalities across Cyprus will stage a three-hour work stoppage on Monday, August 3, to protest against the government's economic policies. Andreas Vyras, Mayor of Larnaca and President of the Union of Municipalities, confirmed that all municipalities are expected to participate, with no objections raised by any local authority to date. During the strike, all local government services will be suspended, including essential tasks such as waste collection.

The protest follows a dispute with the Ministry of Interior regarding state funding and the recent local government reform. The Union of Municipalities argues that the 15 million euros allocated to them is insufficient to cover the newly assigned responsibility of maintaining primary road networks. Officials claim that inflation has significantly eroded the purchasing power of state grants in recent years. The Union is demanding additional funding to compensate for these losses, which they intend to use as a basis for further dialogue with the government regarding the future of local administration.
