UN Secretary-General visits Nicosia amid local wildfire and political debate

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has arrived in Nicosia for high-level meetings with the leaders of the island's two communities. Accompanied by his personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin and special representative Colin Stewart, Guterres aims to revitalize stalled negotiations regarding the Cyprus settlement.

Meanwhile, national authorities are managing the aftermath of a major wildfire near the village of Agia Anna. The blaze, which destroyed approximately 20 hectares of vegetation and forced the temporary evacuation of residents in Agia Anna and Psevdas, was reportedly sparked by the National Guard's 70th Engineer Battalion during munitions destruction exercises. These activities were conducted in violation of restrictions imposed due to current extreme heat conditions. Additionally, Member of the European Parliament Fidias Panayiotou has called for a legislative ban on foreign political advertising in Cyprus, following the appearance of billboards promoting Israeli Prime Ministerial candidate Gadi Eisenkot near Larnaca Airport and the Nicosia-Limassol highway.
