Paphos upgrades public trash bins with integrated ashtrays

The Municipality of Paphos has launched an initiative to upgrade public waste infrastructure by installing integrated ashtrays on existing trash bins. Proposed by municipal councilor Antonis Christodoulou and supported by Acting Mayor Angelos Onisiforou, the project aims to reduce cigarette litter, improve city cleanliness, and prevent fire hazards caused by improperly discarded cigarette butts. The implementation will begin with the modification of 15 to 20 units, followed by a broader rollout across the city center and coastal areas.

This cost-effective solution utilizes existing infrastructure, with the metallic upgrades costing approximately €50 per unit. Beyond the installation of new equipment, officials emphasize that the success of the environmental initiative relies heavily on public cooperation and civic responsibility. Future phases of the plan include installing additional designated bins in high-traffic pedestrian zones to ensure long-term maintenance of the city's appearance and safety.
