Manolis Mitsias recites banned song during live performance

During a concert in Dion, Pieria, dedicated to the work of lyricist Nikos Gatsos, renowned singer Manolis Mitsias defied a ban imposed by Giorgos Chatzidakis, the son of composer Manos Chatzidakis. The younger Chatzidakis had issued a legal notice prohibiting the public performance of certain songs written by his father, specifically preventing Mitsias from singing the classic track 'Giannis o Fonias'.

Mitsias, who has been associated with the song since it was written for him in 1977, explained to the audience that he could not perform it musically. Instead, he chose to recite the lyrics, bypassing the restriction on the musical composition. The incident triggered a significant public debate regarding the rights of heirs to censor intellectual property and the broader implications for artistic freedom and the performance of legacy works.

The event program was overseen by Agathi Dimitrouka, the administrator of the Nikos Gatsos estate.
