Nicosia criminal court requests clarification in central prison documents case

On July 28, 2026, the Nicosia Criminal Court adjourned a case concerning classified documents missing from the central prison after identifying contradictions in the prosecution's arguments. The court required further clarifications from prosecutor Anna Mattheou regarding why certain materials were withheld from the defense and whether they relate to the current charges.

The court highlighted three specific issues requiring resolution. These include discrepancies regarding five documents initially reported as disclosed to the defense, questions surrounding attorney-client privilege, and the legal obligations of the defense to disclose their strategy. As of May 5, authorities had provided 1,116 out of 2,900 total documents to the defense team. Additionally, an impediment involving the accused, identified as K.A., further delayed the submission of responses.

The proceedings have been scheduled to resume this coming Friday to hear the positions of both parties. The court has deferred its final decision on the admissibility of the contested evidence until these clarifications are provided and the remaining documents are inspected.
