Investigation launched after four-year-old boy left brain dead following meningitis

A four-year-old boy from Limassol remains in the Makarios Hospital in Nicosia after suffering severe brain damage linked to meningitis. The child has been hospitalized for approximately two weeks, with reports indicating he is brain dead. The tragedy began on July 8 when the boy developed a fever, prompting his parents to consult their pediatrician. Despite prescribed medication and tests, his condition failed to improve, leading to his admission to the Limassol General Hospital where he was diagnosed with meningitis.

The child's parents have publicly accused the attending pediatrician and the medical staff at Limassol General Hospital of significant delays and clinical errors, which they claim directly resulted in his current critical condition. According to reports, the boy allegedly became brain dead on July 14 while being transferred to the Makarios Hospital.

In response to the public outcry and the family's accusations, the State Health Services Organisation (OKYPY) has officially launched an investigation to determine the facts. Spokesman Charalambos Charilaou stated that the agency is reviewing the case with objectivity and seriousness, adhering to established procedures. The organization has expressed its sympathy to the family while the investigation into potential medical negligence remains ongoing.
