Severe wildfires ravage multiple regions in Greece

Beginning on July 31, 2026, Greece has faced a series of devastating wildfires across Viotia, Attica, Rethymno, and the Argolis region, exacerbated by gale-force winds. The situation in Porto Germeno has been particularly critical, with reports suggesting that 100 to 150 homes have been destroyed. Authorities have issued multiple 112 emergency alerts, forcing the evacuation of numerous settlements including Psatha, Agia Paraskevi, and Livadostrata. In total, 420 firefighters, 20 specialized units, and 120 vehicles are currently mobilized, supported by 19 aircraft and 11 helicopters that began aerial operations once conditions permitted.

Simultaneously, legal action has commenced in Rethymno regarding a deadly fire from July 29. A grid operator from DEDDIE has been charged with criminal arson by negligence following the deaths of two firefighters. Investigators indicate that the fire was sparked by mid-voltage power lines oscillating in high winds. As of early August, firefighting efforts continue to prioritize containing active fronts near Livadostrata and the wider Porto Germeno area. Authorities remain on high alert, as officials express ongoing concerns about potential reignitions due to the persisting extreme weather conditions across the country.
