Wildfire breaks out in the Kampi area of Paros
A significant wildfire erupted on Tuesday afternoon in the Kampi area of the island of Paros, prompting an extensive emergency response. The Fire Department received notification of the incident at approximately 13:30, leading to the rapid deployment of ground forces, local municipal equipment, and aerial support. While initial reports from media suggested the fire was near residential zones, the Mayor of Paros, Konstantinos Bizas, clarified that the blaze is primarily burning waste at the local landfill site and surrounding low vegetation, rather than in forested areas or directly within the main residential clusters.
Firefighting operations are currently ongoing, with a helicopter providing aerial assistance from the outset and two additional Canadair aircraft requested from Athens to reinforce the containment efforts. All available emergency units on the island remain stationed at the location, working to prevent the spread of the flames towards nearby scattered dwellings. Authorities are continuing their assessment of the site as they labor to bring the situation fully under control.
