Tensions rise over new teacher evaluation system in Cyprus

Educational unions in Cyprus, including POED, OELMEK, and OLTEK, have formally demanded the suspension of the new teacher evaluation legislation. The conflict centers on the formative assessment component, which the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth (YPAN) intends to implement starting in the upcoming September school year.

During a meeting of the Evaluation Monitoring Committee chaired by Director General Marios Panagidis, the unions argued that the system cannot proceed because essential prerequisites, such as the appointment of senior educators and inspectors, have not been met. Unions accused Mr. Panagidis of acting unilaterally and exhibiting offensive behavior by abruptly ending the dialogue. In response, the Ministry stated that formative assessment is now enshrined in law and that no extensions will be granted, maintaining the original implementation timeline.

The Ministry has requested that the unions submit their positions regarding the implementation by August 14. Despite the unions' opposition and claims that the dialogue process has been undermined, the state maintains that the educational reforms will proceed as scheduled without changes.
