Public demonstrations held in Cyprus during UN Secretary-General visit

On July 28, 2026, various groups held demonstrations in Cyprus coinciding with UN Secretary-General António Guterres' visit for a high-level dinner with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman. The bicommunal initiative "United Cyprus," representing 108 civil society organizations, held multiple gatherings, including one outside the UN Representative's office in Nicosia, to advocate for a Bizonal Bicommunal Federation. Notable participants included AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou and DISY politician Averof Neofytou.

The initiative also held events at the Ledra Palace buffer zone and the Nicosia airport, while parallel actions took place in the north near the Agios Dometios crossing. Participants urged the resumption of negotiations to overcome the deadlock that has persisted since 2017. Conversely, on July 29, the Pancyprian Freedom Movement and the "Adoouli Kerinia" association staged a protest at the UN mission offices, rejecting the federation model in favor of a unitary state and calling for an end to the Turkish military occupation.
