UN Secretary-General hosts talks to revive Cyprus peace process

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Cyprus on July 28, 2026, to engage in high-level discussions aimed at reviving the stalled peace process. Following separate meetings with the two leaders, Guterres hosted a working dinner for Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. During his visit, Guterres also met with representatives of civil society and the heads of technical committees, emphasizing that lasting peace requires inclusive dialogue and the practical cooperation of both communities.

The dinner, held at the UN-protected Nicosia airport area, served as an open forum to discuss core issues including methodology, potential convergences, confidence-building measures, and the possibility of an expanded informal conference. President Christodoulides described the session as honest and constructive, expressing cautious optimism regarding Guterres’s political commitment to the process.

Talks are scheduled to continue on July 29 at 10:00, with a press conference by Guterres to follow, where formal announcements regarding the next steps in the peace process are expected. The momentum is set to continue with a follow-up visit by European Commission Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto, who is scheduled to meet with both leaders on Friday.
