UN Secretary-General holds talks with Christodoulides and Erhurman in Nicosia

On July 28, 2026, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres held a dinner meeting in Nicosia with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. The discussions, which took place in an honest atmosphere, covered key issues including methodology, areas of convergence, the potential for an expanded format, and confidence-building measures (CBMs). President Christodoulides expressed hope for concrete announcements following the conclusion of the talks.

Earlier in the day, Guterres conducted several official engagements, including a visit to the Ledra Palace where he laid a wreath at the UNFICYP memorial. He also visited the Anthropological Laboratory of the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) to review the progress of identification efforts and the challenges associated with ongoing excavations. Additionally, the Secretary-General met with representatives of civil society organizations. The dialogue between the leaders is scheduled to resume on July 29 at 10:00 a.m. as part of the ongoing UN-led efforts regarding the Cyprus issue.
