UN Secretary-General holds high-level talks on Cyprus reunification

UN Secretary-General António Guterres is holding a critical tripartite meeting with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman today, July 29, 2026. The meeting, taking place in the UN-protected area of the former Nicosia airport, follows a working dinner held the previous evening. The discussions aim to break the long-standing stalemate in reunification efforts by addressing the substance of the Cyprus problem, methodology, existing convergences, and potential confidence-building measures.

President Christodoulides expressed satisfaction following the initial dinner, noting that discussions were open and sincere, and reaffirmed the UN Secretary-General’s political commitment to the peace process. The primary objective for the Greek Cypriot side is to create conditions for restarting negotiations from where they were interrupted at Crans-Montana. Guterres is expected to hold a press conference immediately following the meeting to announce the results and future procedural steps.

Looking ahead, European Commission Executive Vice-President and EU envoy for the Cyprus problem, Raffaele Fitto, is scheduled to arrive in Cyprus on Thursday evening. He is expected to hold separate meetings with both President Christodoulides and Tufan Erhürman on Friday morning to provide continuity to the current diplomatic momentum.
