Cypriot athletes achieve historic medal success at Glasgow Commonwealth Games

Cypriot athletes have secured significant results at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, which began on July 23, 2026. In judo, Sofia Asvesta won a silver medal in the -52kg category after a final loss to Canada’s Beaton, while Giorgi Balartashvili secured a silver medal in the -66kg division following a golden-point final against Canada’s Julien Frascadore. Petros Christodoulides earned a bronze medal in the same -66kg category by defeating Australian athlete Vas Middleton. The judo tournament featured a historic moment where teammates Balartashvili and Christodoulides faced each other in the semifinals.

In athletics, Philippa Fotopoulou qualified for the women’s long jump final with a best leap of 6.56 meters, placing 7th overall. Earlier, Petro Michaelidis finished 8th in the shot put final with a best throw of 19.23 meters, while Olivia Fotopoulou, despite battling a calf injury, competed in the 200m semifinals. Swimmer Maria Erokhina concluded her participation, finishing 9th in the 200m breaststroke, narrowly missing the final. The Games continue with further events scheduled, including the long jump final for Philippa Fotopoulou.
