Cypriot athletes excel at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

The 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, held from July 23 to August 2, 2026, have been marked by significant successes for the Cypriot national team, which sent 36 athletes across six disciplines. The judo team delivered historic results, headlined by Sofia Asvesta, who won a silver medal in the -52kg category, and Petros Christodoulides, who secured bronze in the -66kg division. Additionally, Odysseas Georgakis earned a bronze medal in the -81kg category. Giorgi Balartashvili, who previously won gold in Birmingham 2022, took silver in the -66kg category after an intense internal final against Christodoulides.

In athletics, Philippa Fotopoulou qualified for the women's long jump final with a leap of 6.56 meters, eventually finishing in 7th place overall. Conversely, Olivia Fotopoulou struggled with a calf injury, finishing 24th in the 200m semifinals and subsequently withdrawing from further competition to prioritize recovery. Meanwhile, Iosif Michalis Papas achieved a notable 6th place finish in the men’s discus throw final with a best attempt of 59.31 meters. As the Games conclude, the delegation continues to compete in remaining judo events, having reached a total of eight medals including multiple silver and bronze honors.
