Greece approves the Achilles Shield air defence project

The Greek State Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence has officially approved the procurement of the “Achilles Shield” air defence system. This project, estimated at €5.3 billion, aims to create an integrated security network by consolidating existing military assets from the Greek Army, Air Force, and Navy, including Patriot batteries, fighter jets, and naval platforms. Key components of the system will include the Spyder air defence setup, Barak MX interceptors, and ELM-2084 radar systems, mirroring capabilities similar to Israel’s “David’s Sling.”

The initiative reflects a deepening, though informal, defence alignment between Greece, the Republic of Cyprus, and Israel. Proponents suggest that the system will significantly enhance regional defensive capabilities, with 25% of the manufacturing process scheduled to take place within Greece. The project is expected to reach full operational status within 35 months.

Separately, Israeli military experts have noted that while Israel maintains strong operational military success, it faces strategic challenges in its regional security environment. Former intelligence official Dror Shalom recently emphasized that Israel must integrate its military power with broader diplomatic strategies, citing the importance of strengthened cooperation with Mediterranean partners like Greece and Cyprus to address ongoing regional threats effectively.
