Paphos authorities launch crackdown on illegal electric scooter use

Paphos municipal authorities and the police have launched a series of targeted operations to curb the illegal use of personal mobility devices (PMDs), such as electric scooters, following a spike in accidents and traffic violations. These enforcement measures began on July 28, 2026, with an initial operation in the Kato Paphos tourist area resulting in 23 reports and the confiscation of three devices used on prohibited pedestrian walkways. Following a meeting at the Municipal Hall with city officials and local traffic police, these operations were scaled up to city-wide status.

By July 30, a coordinated effort led by Traffic Police Inspector Andronikos Tsappis resulted in 31 additional reports and 23 more scooter seizures. Crucially, investigators discovered that three rental business operators were functioning without municipal licenses and were illegally renting devices to minors. Since the beginning of 2026, Paphos authorities have documented 132 violations related to PMDs. Police have stated that these high-intensity inspections will continue to ensure public safety and regulatory compliance. Under current regulations, private electric scooters are restricted to roads with speed limits up to 30 km/h, cycle lanes, and designated shared paths; usage on sidewalks or pedestrian squares without specific authorization is strictly forbidden.
