UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres visits Cyprus to advance peace process

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres visited Cyprus in late July 2026 to discuss the future of the island's reunification. To this end, UN experts have begun recording previous convergences reached in negotiations up to Crans-Montana in 2017. While the UN aims to utilize these past agreements as a foundation for future talks, diplomatic efforts are currently balancing these objectives with seasonal political lulls.

Reaction to the visit has been mixed. While some factions see it as a necessary attempt to restart the process, others, such as Kudret Ozersai, argue that no tangible progress has been made. Meanwhile, officials continue to coordinate diplomatic steps for August to ensure that any upcoming conference is well-prepared and results-oriented.
